New Apple Watch Will Have Built-In ECG, and It’s Already FDA Approved

At Apple’s annual September hardware launch event, Apple revealed a major medical advancement added to their newest update in the Apple Watch line: the Apple Watch Series 4.

Among other updates including a larger screen and smaller bezel, the system boasts the first FDA approved direct to consumer ECG, or electrocardiogram, a medical device used to measure the heart’s rhythm, rather than just the heart rate.

“The Apple Watch has become an intelligent guardian for your health,” Apple COO Jeff Williams said.

Ideally, this will allow Apple consumers to have more accurate heart rate data at their fingertips, allowing for potential earlier detection of atrial fibrillation, a disorder characterized by irregular or rapid heart rates. The electronic sensors for the ECG are built directly into the back of the watch and will transform the new Apple Watch into a fully regulated medical device.

Ivor J. Benjamin, the President of the American Heart Association and a practicing cardiologist, presented on the Apple Watch’s potential to record data whenever they show symptoms of a heart related issue, not just when an ECG or stress test is run in a medical environment.

The watch will also include an onboard accelerometer that will enable fall detection in medical patients and elderly individuals. The device even has an option for automatically calling emergency services in the event that a wearer falls and does not move for a set period of time.
